The models work. The system around them does not.
Stanford data shows:
- 56 percent of experts expect positive long-term impact
- 10 percent of the public agrees
- 64 percent of people expect fewer jobs due to AI
- Trust in US government handling of AI sits at 31 percent
This is not a perception gap. It is a product gap.
Experts measure capability. Users measure consequences.
People are not focused on AGI timelines. They are focused on job loss, rising costs, and systems they cannot inspect or control.
Usage is increasing while trust is decreasing. That is a failure of system design, not model quality.
What actually matters now
- Systems are deployed faster than they are understood
- Outputs cannot be traced or audited clearly
- Pricing, data usage, and lock-in remain opaque
- Real-world impact is visible before reliability is solved
If you are building in AI, ask
- Who owns failure when the model is wrong
- Can users trace how outputs are generated
- What happens to cost and control at scale
- Does usage increase trust or expose failure modes
Teams are shipping models. Few are building trust. The second group determines what survives.
